Content Adaptive Lagrange Multiplier Selection for Rate-Distortion Optimization in 3-D Wavelet-Based Scalable Video Coding SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

Rate-distortion optimization (RDO) plays an essential role in substantially enhancing the coding efficiency. Currently, rate-distortion optimized mode decision is widely used in scalable video coding (SVC). Among all the possible coding modes, it aims to select the one which has the best trade-off between bitrate and compression distortion. Specifically, this tradeoff is tuned through the choice of the Lagrange multiplier. Despite the prevalence of conventional method for Lagrange multiplier selection in hybrid video coding, the underlying formulation is not applicable to 3-D wavelet-based SVC where the explicit values of the quantization step are not available, with on consideration of the content features of input signal. In this paper, an efficient content adaptive Lagrange multiplier selection algorithm is proposed in the context of RDO for 3-D wavelet-based SVC targeting quality scalability. Our contributions are two-fold. First, we introduce a novel weighting method, which takes account of the mutual information, gradient per pixel, and texture homogeneity to measure the temporal subband characteristics after applying the motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) technique. Second, based on the proposed subband weighting factor model, we derive the optimal Lagrange multiplier. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm enables more satisfactory video quality with negligible additional computational complexity.

QoE driven cross-layer scheme for DASH-based scalable video transmission over LTE EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

Recently using Scalable Video Coding (SVC) in Dynamic Adaptive Streaming of over HTTP (DASH) has attracted more and more attention. In this paper, we present a Quality-of-Experience (QoE) driven Cross-Layer Scheme (QCLS) for DASH-based scalable video transmission over LTE. Specifically, assuming the priority-based extraction be exploited for bitstream adaption, we first propose a new continuous Rate-Distortion (RD) model for scalable video stream. Then to guarantee continuous playback, a two-level rate adaption algorithm is presented: a novel throughput-based algorithm is implemented for dynamic selection of segment bitrate on the DASH client side at the first level, and the second level applies the rate adaption by designing a suitable packet scheduling strategy at the Base Station. The packets of each segment with lower priority that are still left in the packet queues when their playback deadline is missed, would be considered as the ones that are beyond the actual transmission ability and discarded by the second-level rate adaption. Furthermore, in order to reasonably utilize the wireless resources in LTE (Long-Term Evolution) system, a cross-layer optimization problem that maximizes the total weighted received quality of the currently transmitted segments for all clients is formulated. In view of its high complexity of obtaining the optimal solution, we develop an approach of the suboptimal solution, which can determine a locally optimal transmission strategy in resource allocation as well as the corresponding Modulation and Coding Scheme. Accordingly, the transmission rate of each client can be obtained. Simulation results show that our proposed cross-layer scheme can provide better performance than the existing ones for DASH-based scalable video transmission over LTE.

Bitrate-Based No-Reference Video Quality Assessment Combining the Visual Perception of Video Contents EI Scopus

IEEE In video communication, the quality of video is mainly determined by bitrate in general. Moreover, the effect of video contents and their visual perception on video quality assessment (VQA) is often overlooked. However, in fact, for different videos, although the bitrates are the same, their VQA scores are still significantly different. Hence, it is assumed that the bitrate, video contents, and human visual characteristics mainly affect the VQA. Based on the above three aspects, in this paper, we designed a bitrate-based no-reference (NR) VQA metric combining the visual perception of video contents, namely, BRVPVC. In this metric, first an initial VQA model was proposed by only considering the bitrate alone. Then, the visual perception model for video contents was designed based on the texture complexity and local contrast of image, temporal information of video, and their visual perception features. Finally, two models were synthesized by adding certain weight coefficients into an overall VQA metric, namely, BRVPVC. Furthermore, ten reference videos and 150 distorted videos in the LIVE video database were used to test the metric. Moreover, based on the results of evaluating the videos in LIVE, VQEG, IRCCyN, EPFL-PoliMI, IVP, CSIQ, and Lisbon databases, the performance of BRVPVC is respectively compared with that of six full-reference (FR) metrics and ten NR VQA metrics. The results show that our VQA metric has a higher accuracy than six common FR VQA metrics and eight NR VQA metrics, and it is close to other two NR VQA metrics in accuracy. The corresponding values of Pearson linear correlation coefficient and Spearman rank order correlation coefficient reached 0.8547 and 0.8260, respectively. In addition, the computational complexity of proposed VQA metric is lower than video signal-to-noise ratio, video quality model, motion-based video integrity evaluation, spatiotemporal most apparent distortion, V-BLINDS, and V-CORNIA metrics. Moreover, the proposed metric has a better generalization property than these metrics.

With the rapid growth of modern multimedia applications, 3D wavelet-based scalable video coding (SVC) codec has received considerable attention lately because of its high coding performance and flexibility in bitstream scalability. It combines the motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) together with the spatial decomposition to produce an embedded bitstream offering various levels of video quality over the heterogeneous networks. However, in the existing 3D wavelet-based SVC schemes, where the block types for block matching algorithms are limited, weighting matrices for block-wise motion compensation are fixed, and variations in activities of temporal subbands are not considered in the selection of the Lagrange multiplier for mode decision. In this paper, our major contribution is to provide some recent extensions to the well-known scalable subband/wavelet video codec Motion-Compensated Embedded Zero Block Coding (MC-EZBC) using three novel and content adaptive algorithms. Firstly, the enhanced hierarchical variable size block matching (Enhanced HVSBM) algorithm is proposed for the variable block size motion estimation. Then, the rate-distortion optimization (RDO) based adaptive Lagrange multiplier selection model for mode decision is presented. Finally, we introduce the adaptive weighting matrices design for overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC). Experimental results show that all the three proposed algorithms significantly improve the overall coding performance of MC-EZBC. Comparisons with other popular wavelet-based SVC codecs demonstrate the effectiveness of our improved codec in terms of both video quality assessment and computational complexity.

In this paper, an efficient content-based rate control scheme is proposed in the context of rate-distortion optimization for 3-D wavelet-based scalable video coding (SVC). Despite the prevalence of the conventional rate control methods in DCT-based SVC, the underlying formulation is not directly applicable to 3-D wavelet-based SVC. Performing optimal rate control with 3-D wavelet coding methods is difficult because energy is not conserved after applying the motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) technique. To address the inherent challenges, a thorough analysis of the distortion relationship between temporal subbands and reconstructed frames is explored for controlling the video quality fluctuation. Although the quantization distortion of the reconstructed frame is assessed by tracking the filter-based quantization error along the temporal decomposition trees, it fails to consider the pixel connectivity status and the temporal subband content characteristic that ultimately degrades the video coding performance. Based on our statistical investigation, an adaptive MCTF decomposition level selection is first developed to enable more accurate motion compensation than the original MCTF. Then, the mutual information, the gradient per pixel, and the texture homogeneity are effectively utilized to measure the subband content and enhance the rate control performance. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can reduce the bit estimation error and improve the video quality with smoother PSNR variation as compared to three other benchmark rate control schemes.

Abstract :

While a lot of works have been proposed to smartly adapt quality of video streaming services, none of them involves the mechanism of adaptive media playout, which could lead to better performance in both the user experience of the service and the effectiveness of radio resource. In this paper, an adaptive media playout assisted rate adaptation scheme (AMP-RA) is proposed to improve the user experience of the video streaming over LIE systems. Firstly, an optimization problem is formulated, which aims at maximizing user experience and subject to the constraints of playout continuity and the amount of available resource. Moreover, a two-step method is proposed to solve the problem. In step 1, a preliminary requesting plan will be determined in order to guarantee the playout continuity. In step 2, the residual resource is utilized for the clients to improve their experience. Specifically, we give a method for the users to lower its playout frame rate and utilize the resource. Then, based on this method, the residual resource is allocated to the UEs. Finally, the simulation results verify the performance of AMP-RA in improving the user experience.

Image Quality Assessment Based on the Visual Perception of Image Contents EI CPCI-S Scopus

Abstract :

This paper describes an image quality assessment (IQA) metric based on the visual perception of image contents (VPIC). In the metric, VPIC is firstly modelled by simulating the nonlinearity of luminance perception, masking properties and contrast sensitivity characteristics of human visual system (HVS). Then the source and distorted images are processed by this model respectively, and their intensity differences are calculated. Finally, based on the intensity differences, an IQA model is built. And 47 reference images and 1549 distorted images in the LIVE, TID2008 and CSIQ databases are tested with the IQA metric. The results show that it is helpful to improve the consistency between the objective IQA scores and the subjective mean opinion scores (MOSs) combining the visual perception and complexity of image contents.

Resulting from the rapid growth of wireless video services in the recent years, radio resource is often inadequate in the high data rate communication environment. Under the circumstance, it is important to make full use of limited resource for efficient video transmission. Hence, we propose a joint content and channel aware (JCCA) resource allocation algorithm in relay-enhanced OFDMA system. It can maximize accumulation of allocated subcarriers' contribution for transmitting video data so as to improve overall quality of users' received video under resource constrained conditions. As it is described in this work, the algorithm is implemented by packet scheduling, path selection and subcarrier allocation, in which time-varying data content and channel state are jointly considered at the same time. And the two implementation schemes, JCCAG and JCCAL, are designed for JCCA resource allocation algorithm. JCCAG is executed for allocating subcarriers through global search among all subcarriers' contribution. For reducing complexity of JCCAG, subcarriers are allocated according to the corresponding contribution towards each user on the basis of local search in JCCAL. In the simulation, we make comparison between the JCCA resource allocation algorithm and others for video transmission in relay-enhanced OFDMA system. And the comparison results are evaluated through objective and subjective criterion, respectively. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can perform better in improving overall quality of users' received video.

In order to improve the compression ratio and quality of the image, combined with the contrast sensitivity characteristics of human vision system and the spectrum characteristics of image in the transform domain, a method is proposed to form the adaptive quantization table in image compression. And according to the JPEG coding algorithm and replacing the quantization table in JPEG, simulations are carried out for three images by programming, whose results are compared with JPEG compression at the same time. The results show that: compared with JPEG compression, under the same compression ratio, average SSIM and PSNR of three decompressed images increase by 1.67% and 4.96% after being compressed using adaptive quantization, respectively. They show that the adaptive quantization based on HVS is a good and practical method. © 2016, Science Press. All right reserved.
