Abstract :

This study presented an experimental investigation on heat transfer performance of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger with and without circular fins. Particular attention has been paid to the effect of injection flow rate of heat transfer fluid (HTF) on the thermal performance of the heat exchanger. A purposely-designed apparatus was built for experimental observation. Results showed that the application of fins had a great effect on improving phase change heat transfer and the full charging time was significantly reduced. Injection flow rate of HTF was found to have little influence upon the performance of the heat exchanger. Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract :

Evaporative cooling is a kind of technology to utilize the decalescence and cooling of evaporation of water. In order to decrease the relative humidity of outdoor fresh air and improve the applied range of evaporative cooling techniques, a novel evaporative cooling experimental system that employs solar energy powered reel dehumidifying system to pretreat the outdoor fresh air is proposed in this research. Experimental tests for this system were performed in a typical residential building in Xi'an. The result shows that the evaporative cooling system can effectively decrease the indoor temperature to 28℃, and maintain the relative humidity to about 70%. The solar energy powered reel dehumidifying system can further improve the operation effect of this system. The research result has directive significance to promote the evaporative cooling system in the future application in residential buildings. Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Indoor environmental controls are critical considerations when preserving artifacts in museums. Controlling the indoor environment of site museum buildings with large space layout typically consumes large amounts of energy. Most of the energy load needed to preserve relics is dissipated throughout the non-occupied space, because the environments that contain the relics occupy relatively little space compared to the entire exhibition hall. In this study, an energy efficient local ventilation system was proposed to independently control the environment of a funerary pit, which was preserved within a museum separate from the large exhibition hall. An experimental hall, which consists of a funerary pit and an experimental local ventilation system, was built to simulate a site museum building. Experiments were conducted to investigate the system's performance and to validate its ability to preserve historical terracotta figurines in their semi-exposed pits within the exhibition hall. The study evaluated the stability of the conservation environment and the system's energy usage by assessing the effects of the ventilation rate. The experimental results showed that the local ventilation system provides an energy-saving strategy supporting the environmental control of the funerary pit. The LV system significantly decreased temperature fluctuations in the funerary pit and temperature differences across semi-exposed relics. The system could be used to control the local preservation environment of the funerary pit separately from a large space exhibition hall. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Advances in Pore-Scale Simulation of Oil Reservoirs EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

At the high water cut stage, the residual oil in a reservoir becomes complex and dispersed. Moreover, it is challenging to achieve good predictions of the movement of oil and water in a reservoir according to the macroscopic models based on the statistic parameters of this scenario. However, pore-scale simulation technology based on directly tracking the interaction among different phases can make an accurate prediction of the fluid distribution in the pore space, which is highly important in the improvement of the recovery rate. In this work, pore-scale simulation methods, including the pore network model, lattice Boltzmann method, Navier-Stokes equation-based interface tracking methods, and smoothed particle hydrodynamics, and relevant technologies are summarized. The principles, advantages, and disadvantages, as well as the degree of difficulty in the implementation are analyzed and compared. Problems in the current simulation technologies, micro sub-models, and applications in physicochemical percolation are also discussed. Finally, potential developments and prospects in this field are summarized.

Abstract :

Humidity is one of the most influence factors of human thermal comfort, and the liquid desiccant system is an effective dehumidification mode. However, in traditional liquid desiccant system, the liquid droplet entrainment and air pollution often happens between wet air and the liquid desiccant solution because of the direct contact mode. In this study, a novel water vapor transmission mode based on the hydrophobic microporous fiber membrane is proposed. On the one hand, the path of liquid droplet entrainment is shut down due to the closed cycle of liquid desiccant in membrane absorber; on the other hand, only the water vapor can transfer across the membrane because of the micro construction and porous of membrane material, and the dehumidification effect is the major problem. Therefore, numerical simulation of hollow fiber membrane-based liquid desiccant dehumidification is set up, and different operating conditions in both wet air and liquid desiccant are changed to analyze the dehumidification effect. © ACRA 2018 - 9th Asian Conference on Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning. Local Fixed Pivot Quadrature Method of Moments for Solution of Population Balance Equation SCIE

Abstract :

A local fixed pivot quadrature method of moments (LFPQMOM) is proposed for the solution of the population balance equation (PBE) for the aggregation and breakage process. First, the sectional representation for aggregation and breakage is presented. The continuous summation of the Dirac Delta function is adopted as the discrete form of the continuous particle size distribution in the local section as performed in short time Fourier transformation (STFT) and the moments in local sections are tracked successfully. Numerical simulation of benchmark test cases including aggregation, breakage, and aggregation breakage combined processes demonstrate that the new method could make good predictions for the moments along with particle size distribution without further assumption. The accuracy in the numerical results of the moments is comparable to or higher than the quadrature method of moment (QMOM) in most of the test cases. In theory, any number of moments can be tracked with the new method, but the computational expense can be relatively large due to many scalar equations that may be included.

Abstract :

In this paper, we present a new numerical scheme to describe the dynamic evolution of multiphase polydisperse systems in terms of time, space, and properties by coupling the Eulerian-Lagrangian method for air-particle two-phase flow and population balance equations to describe particle property evolution due to microbehaviors (eg, aggregation, breakage, and growth). This coupling scheme was used to comprehensively simulate the two-phase flow structure, particle size spectrum, particle number, and volume concentrations. These were characterized by a high-resolution particle tracking using the Lagrangian approach and the high precision of moments of the particle size spectrum by solving the population balance equation with the quadrature method of moments. The algorithm of the coupling scheme was incorporated into the open source computational fluid dynamics software OpenFOAM to simulate the dynamic evolution of vehicle exhaust plume. The impacts of vehicle velocity, exhaust temperature, and aggregation efficiency on the distribution of auto exhaust particles in space and changes in their properties were analyzed. The results indicate that the particle number concentration, volume concentration, and average diameter of particles in the vehicle exhaust plume could be strongly affected by the plume structure and flow properties.

The radiant heating system assisted by an air source heat pump has been widely applied in China for its effective energy conservation, high comfort performance and flexible utilization. Because the coefficient of performance of the system is strictly controlled by the supply water temperature heated by the air source heat pump, an efficient radiant terminal with low-temperature supply water is of significance to the coefficient of performance. In this research, the energy-saving feature of the capillary mat radiant heating system was first proved theoretically based on the influence of the heat transfer temperature difference on the coefficient of performance of the air source heat pump. In order to compare the performances of the capillary mat radiant and floor radiant heating systems, an experiment platform of two different radiant terminals assisted by an air source heat pump was established in a residential building in Xi'an, China. Experimental results showed that, to satisfy the indoor heating requirements, the supply and return water temperatures ought to be 35.0? and 30.9?, respectively, and for the capillary mat radiant heating system, 43.9? and 38.8?, respectively, for the floor radiant heating system. However, the electricity consumption of the capillary mat radiant heating system is 45% less than that of the floor radiant heating system. Thus, our study validated the energy-saving potential of the capillary mat radiant heating system assisted by an air source heat pump.

Abstract :

Dust devils in nature usually contain abundant wind energy, a new dust-devil-like whirlwind energy system has been proposed which could generate stable swirling wind. A circular solar-energy-collecting shed with pre-rotation vanes has been devised to generate the whirlwind flow by heating the air inflow into the shed. The effects of geometrical parameters(shed radius and air inflow incident angle) and temperature differences on the whirlwind characteristic velocities were evaluated by numerical simulation and experimental test. With the distribution and trend we could obtain the optimal incident angle. By simulating the cases with this incident angle, together with the similarity analysis, we could summarize the confines of the solar-energy-collecting shed size under different heating temperature differences, which could help to choose the optimal structural and operating parameters for the system. In addition, the confines obtained from the initial conditions on Mars also draw a future application prospect of the system working in space. © 2017, Science Press. All right reserved.

Indoor environmental control has been proved to be critical for long-term preservation for artifacts in archaeology museums. However, it is usually a very energy intensive process to sustain a steady condition continuously throughout the year for the whole exhibition hall. In this study, an energy efficient strategy that only controls the local environment for the preservation area is proposed. A laboratory room with a funerary pit was constructed to simulate a large open exhibition hall. Experimental investigations using the test pit, with radiant panels and air curtain system for control of the local environment for the funerary pit, validated this management strategy for the preservation of relics in archaeology museums. The results show that using both an air curtain and a radiant heating system provides a feasible and energy-saving strategy for controlling the preservation environment independently.
