Abstract :

Effect of milling time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti(C,N)-304 stainless steel cermet and the fracture mechanism were studied in this work. The microstructure was investigated by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) combined with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and field emission transmission electron microscope (FETEM). FETEM and EDS were also used to analyze the Ti(C,N)/304ss interface. Mechanical properties such as transverse rupture strength (TRS) and hardness were also measured. Results show that prolonged milling time decreases the Ti(C,N) grain size and improves the homogeneity of microstructure. As a consequence, the frequency of intergranular fracture increased and it can improve the mechanical properties. Fe and Ti elements could interdiffuse and the hard phase was closely bonded with binder phase. The Ti(C,N)/Ti(C,N) interface was weaker than Ti(C,N)/304ss interface. Results also show that the transverse rupture strength and the hardness increase with increasing milling time and the maximum values were obtained at 18 h with 1437 MPa and 83.7 HRA, respectively.

Abstract :

In this paper, Fe, Ni, Cr, Mn, Si, Celement powders and Ti(C,N) ceramic powder were used as starting materials to fabricate Ti(C,N)-304 stainless steel cermet via high-energy ball milling in argon atmosphere. Effect of milling time on powders' structure, including morphology of powder, average grain size, dislocation density and the solid solubility of Cr in Fe, were studied by x-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). XRD pattern shows that mechanical alloying was occurred during high energy ball milling. Nickel and chromium were gradually solid dissolved into iron and formed 304 stainless steel (304 s), the maximum solid solubility of Cr in Fe is 16.8 at.% obtained at 18 h. The mean grain size of Ti(C,N) particles and 304 s grains declined before 14 h and the minimum grain size of them were about 20 nm and 250 nm respectively, which is consistent with the results revealed by TEM images. The dislocation density in stainless steel powder increased with increasing milling time. After the powders were milled for 18 h, the cermet sintered at 1450 degrees C for 1 h has the maximum hardness (83.7 HRA) and relative density (93.3%).

Abstract :

In this paper, in-situ submicron TiB2 particles (2.5 wt.%) reinforced AZ91 matrix composites are processed by the master alloy method combined with an optimized SHS technique. The effect of TiB2 particles on the microstructure, ageing behavior and mechanical properties of Mg matrix composites is investigated. The results reveal that only TiB2 phase is in-situ formed in the Al-TiB2 master alloy and exhibits the size distribution of 100 nm-700 nm. Compared with the unreinforced AZ91 alloy, the grain size and morphology of Mg17Al12 phase in as-cast composites are much refined. The ageing process of composites is accelerated and the peak-aged time of composites decreases from 42 h to 22 h significantly with the introduction of TiB2 particles. Large numbers of fine Mg17Al12 in composites preferentially precipitate at grain boundaries and near TiB2 particles regions. In addition, the hardness, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation of as-cast composites are improved by 16.1%, 53.0%, 26.3% and 25.6%, respectively. After T6 heat treatment, the strength of composites is increased further due to large amounts of submicron Mg17Al12 phase, and the age hardening efficiency of composites is higher than that of AZ91 alloy. Tribological behavior of in-situ nanosized TiB2 particles reinforced AZ91 matrix composite EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

To enhance the wear resistance of magnesium alloy to expand its applications, AZ91 matrix composite reinforced with TiB2 particles was developed by in-situ casting, and its tribological behavior was investigated. The dry sliding wear experiment was carried out with the sliding speeds of 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 m/s, at different normal loads of 12.5, 25 and 37.5 N respectively. The hardened AISI 52100 bearing steel was selected as counterbody material. The experimental results reveal that the mechanical properties of composite are improved significantly due to grain refinement and numerous dislocations formed near TiB2 particles. The wear rate of composite reduces with the increase of sliding speeds at all normal loads and wear mechanism is transited from abrasive and mild oxidation wear to delamination and severe oxidation wear, similar to the wear mechanism in various normal loads. However, the mechanically mixed layer formed at higher speeds has a protective effect and the delamination and plastic deformation of subsurface is more severe at higher loads. The wear resistance of composite is greater than that of the matrix at all wear conditions, because TiB2/AZ91 composite possess improved hardness and strength, as well as increased work hardening capacity of subsurface due to the presence of nanosized TiB2 particles.

Abstract :

In this paper, dry sliding tribological properties of self-mated couples of B4C-hBN ceramic composites containing different amounts of hBN have been evaluated using a pin-on-disc friction and wear machine, and the worn surfaces of B4C-hBN specimens have been observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is found that the dry sliding tribological properties of self-mated couples of B4C-hBN ceramic composites take on obvious regularity: with hBN content increasing, the friction coefficient gradually decreases, but the wear coefficient gradually increases. The decrease of friction coefficient could be largely attributed to the formation of a transfer film formed on the wearing surface of the B4C-hBN specimens. The formation of the film is investigated.

Abstract :

Graphite/Cu composites are used as switch slide baseplate materials. However, their mechanical properties would decline with an increase in graphite content. In this study, the interface of nickel coated graphite/Cu composites was modified by depositing electroless plated nickel coatings on the surface of graphite. The interfacial characterizations were researched and modification mechanism of nickel coating in the composites was also analyzed. Finally, mechanical properties of nickel coated graphite/Cu composites with different graphite contents were tested. The results showed that the width of the nickel coating deposited on the surface of graphite was about 131 nm and the nickel coating which was made of spherical nano particles exhibited densification with little distinct pores. The mutual diffusion generating at the interface was about 2.419 pm in the composites. The interface transferred from mechanical bonding to metallurgy bonding. Nickel coating could not only decline diffusion activation energy but also increase diffusion driving force. Compared with the composites with no coating on graphite, improvement of flexural strength raised 35.5% while the relative density enhanced 1.8% and hardness increased 14.2%. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract :

The Mo-ZrO2 alloys were prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis and a powder metallurgy process. The grain size, density and hardness of the alloy sintered compacts were investigated. The deformation behavior of the alloy at high temperature was studied by using a Gleeble-1500D thermal simulated test machine. The strengthening effect of zirconia particles was found during the deformation process of the alloy at high temperature. The result shows the mechanical properties of the Mo-ZrO2 alloys were obviously improved due to the uniform distribution of the small second phase. After adding ZrO2, the hardness of the alloys has increased by 40%, and the high temperature strength of the alloy was increased. At the temperature of 1400 C-omicron, the strength of the alloys was increased by 35% compared with that of the pure molybdenum. The ZrO2 particles can effectively improve the deformation resistance, resulting in increase of the mechanical properties of the Mo-ZrO2 alloys. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract :

A theoretical study is conducted by first-principles theory to study the structural, electronic, elastic and thermal properties of Al4SiC4, Al4C3 and 4H-SiC phases under pressure. The calculated results indicated that the volumetric shrinkage of Al4SiC4 declines to 16% compared with 4H-SiC for 12% and its length of lattice parameter along c-axis decreases faster than that of along other axes in cell structures. The mechanical properties of Al4SiC4 like elastic constants and elastic moduli increase continuously under pressure. The thermal expansion coefficient of three compounds under pressure are studied first. When temperature is lower than 500 K, the coefficient increases rapidly first then gradually tends to a linear accession at higher temperature and the propensity of increment becomes moderate. The C-V data decreases slightly with pressure but increases dramatically with temperature for all compounds.

Abstract :

The NiAl matrix composite coatings containing silver and molybdenum were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying and their tribological properties were investigated in details from 25 to 900 degrees C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman, scanning election microscopy (SEM) and transmission election microscopy (TEM) were used to analyze the composition and microstructure of composite coatings. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results shown that molybdenum and silver were exist in single-phase, but not alloyed in composite coatings. The addition of silver could effectively improve the tribological properties of composite coatings at the wide range of temperature. The silver, nickel and molybdenum could occur the tribo-chemical reaction and form silver molybdates and nickel molybdates lubricating films inside the wear track of composite coatings at high temperature. The friction process promoted the formation of the silver molybdates. The silver molybdates, nickel molybdates and NiO were the main components in composite coatings at high temperature, which could effectively improve tribological properties of composite coatings.

Abstract :

The corrosion behavior of 3003 aluminum alloy in different media was investigated by electrochemical approaches and immersion tests. It was shown that the corrosion of aluminum alloy was influenced by the composition of the solution. The results indicated that the nitrite ion (NO2-) acted as a corrosion inhibitor. The addition of sulfate ion (SO42-) or nitrate ion (NO3-) can weaken this inhibiting effect. Chloride ion (Cl-) and SO42- can accelerate the corrosion of 3003 aluminum alloy greatly.
