Tri-level optimal hardening plan for a resilient distribution system considering reconfiguration and DG islanding EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

There is an increasing awareness of resilience in the face of extreme natural disasters and man-made attacks. Power system resilience includes hardening measures and operational restoration measures. These two aspects of resilience measures are innovatively combined in this paper to improve power system resilience. A tri-level defender-attacker-defender (DAD) model is built to find the best hardening plan under malicious attacks given the available defending resources and operational restoration measures for a distribution system. On the first level, the system defender makes hardening decisions. On the second level, the attacker finds the attack scenario with maximum damage. Given the hardening and attack plans, on the third level, the system operator undertakes resilient operational measures including optimal DG islanding formation and topology reconfiguration. This new model overcomes the limitations of existing DAD models by integrating these operational measures into the mathematical model; the produced hardening strategy is more practical for today's fast-developing smart distribution system. The DAD problem is formed as a tri-level mixed integer optimization problem and the Column Constraint Generation (CCG) method is adopted to accurately achieve the optimal solution. The proposed methodology is applied on an IEEE 33-bus system and a real 94-bus system. Its effectiveness is verified by numerical case studies. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract :

© 2018 IEEE. In the context of the energy internet, traditional demand response (DR) in electricity-only market has difficulty in satisfying diverse energy supplies and demands. This paper proposes an optimal multi-energy bidding strategy to maximize the total profit of the LSE considering integrated demand response (IDR). Finally, case studies have been performed to demonstrate that LSEs can benefit from the IDRs under various circumstances. Specifically, all IDR participants in the multi-energy market sending their bidding curves and capacity to LSEs according to their preferences. Then, the LSE determines the optimal bidding strategy in wholesale market as well as the amount of diverse energies.

Abstract :

Optimally dispatching photovoltaic (PV) inverters is an efficient way to avoid overvoltage in active distribution networks, which may occur in the case of the PV generation surplus load demand. Typically, the dispatching optimization objective is to identify critical PV inverters that have the most significant impact on the network voltage level. Following, it ensures the optimal set-points of both active power and reactive power for the selected inverters, guaranteeing the entire system operating constraints (e.g., the network voltage magnitude) within reasonable ranges. However, the intermittent nature of solar PV energy may affect the selection of the critical PV inverters and also the final optimal objective value. In order to address this issue, a two-stage robust centralized-optimal dispatch model is proposed in this paper to achieve a robust PV inverter dispatch solution considering the PV output uncertainties. In addition, the conic relaxation-based branch flow formulation and the column-and-constraint generation algorithm are employed to deal with the proposed robust optimization model. Case studies on a 33-bus distribution network and comparisons with the deterministic optimization approach have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract :

In modern society, with the development of electricity grids, besides the power supply continuity and stability, more attention are paid on the system voltage level and voltage parameters. Therefore, traditional reliability evaluation method with only some those reliability indexes cannot meet the situation and voltage attribute parameters and current power losses also need be calculated at the same time, which can prove a more comprehensive estimation for distribution system. Based on related researches from domestic and overseas, this paper is to find an efficient, feasible and flexible integrated reliability evaluation of distribution network. In this paper, a distribution reliability evaluation model is established in Matlab as a platform, using the Sequential Monte Carlo Simulation method to simulate elements' faults more accurately. This model includes the adjustment of nodes voltages in system, by the means of reactive power compensation and optimization using the Particle Swarm Optimization (OPS) algorithm. When the OPS is be used to solve optimization problem, power flow need to be calculated repeatedly, so the tool, Open DSS, is chosen to solve power flow calculation fast. In addition, the interface between Open DSS and Matlab is designed for Matlab invoking Open DSS which will make iteration faster. Finally, a series of improved reliability integrated evaluation indexes are defined. Combined reliability indexes, SAIFI, CAIDI, CAIFI, EENS, ASAI, with power quality indexes such as system voltage eligibility rate, voltage offset, power loss rate and other indicators to form a new reliability evaluation index system of distribution system. Taking the improved PG&E 69 node system as an example, use the model and algorithm proposed in this paper to evaluate reliability of this system.

Abstract :

To address daily operating times of discrete reactive power compensators, multi-period reactive power optimization (MPRPO) is set up to minimize energy loss over multiple periods. This paper proposes a second-order cone relaxation and decomposition (SOCRD) algorithm for solving MPRPO problem considering uncertain PV integration in active distribution networks to improve computational performance. To deal with uncertainty output of PV generation, an extended stochastic programming is employed in this method, coordinating with continuous and discrete reactive power compensators. Solution quality and computation performance are compared with deterministic model as well as traditional algorithms on IEEE-33 bus system, which illustrates efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract :

Under the dual pressures of energy crisis and environmental degradation, and to make full use of renewable energy, we propose the concept of integrated energy system (IES), in which power system is a core. Coordination and optimization of various energy resources, such as electricity, gas, cold/heat during their distribution, transformation, storage and consumption, are achieved. From the viewpoint of system planning and operation, researches on reliability evaluation is of great significance to promoting the development of IES. Based on the background, definition, meaning, and typical architecture of IES, the current research status of reliability evaluation is summarized, and problems on reliability evaluation of IES that need to be urgently resolved are concluded from three aspects: model, algorithm, and index system. Furthermore, the future research directions are introduced, which can provide a reference and suggestion for the reliability evaluation of IES. © 2017, High Voltage Engineering Editorial Department of CEPRI. Network congestion and grid faults lead to the reserve deliverability problem. To ensure the reserve effectiveness and network security for multi-zonal power system, zonal reserve requirements and new algorithm are proposed in real-time optimal dispatching. The reserve capacity demand for both island and receiving-end in multi-zonal power systems is analyzed, and a real-time energy-reserve optimal dispatch model is developed to minimize the cost of energy and reserve, including systematic reserve requirements, zonal reserve requirements and N-1 security constraints. The model is a supper-large scale programming, so the method of dynamic active set is introduced to power system optimal dispatching problem to solve the proposed model iteratively. Moreover, numerical tests are performed based on the IEEE 118-bus test system and a real-life receiving-end power system in China. The results show that the computing period can meet the real-time dispatch interval need, and the real-time energy-reserve scheduling as well as the responsive reserve dispatch after N-1 outage are available, which verifies the rationality and feasibility of the proposed model. © 2017, Editorial Office of Journal of Xi'an Jiaotong University. Dynamic economic dispatch (DED) over multiple time periods is a large-scale coupled spatial-temporal optimization problem. Therefore, the Lagrangian relaxation method has been widely used to split the large-scale optimization problem with coupled structure into several small sub-problems. In order to bring robustness for updating the dual multipliers and yielding convergence without strong assumptions, the augmented Lagrangian relaxation method is introduced in this paper. However, the added penalty term in an augmented Lagrangian function is non-separable, which leads to the difficulty in achieving full decomposition for parallel computation. To address this problem, a diagonal quadratic approximation method is employed to yield an approximated block separation of the non-separable penalty term. Furthermore, the ramp rate constraints are relaxed in this paper, so that the DED model is decomposed into several single-period economic dispatch models that can be efficiently handled in parallel, called the parallel augmented Lagrangian relaxation method. Particularly, the proposed relaxation strategy has a high separability feature which theoretically leads to sound convergence property. Numerical results on the IEEE 118-bus and a practical Polish 2383-bus test system over a different number of time periods show the effectiveness of the proposed method. In addition, the proposed method can be extended to other coupled spatial-temporal scheduling problems in power systems, such as energy storage dispatch.

Abstract :

Forming multiple micorgrids with distributed generators offers a resilient solution to restore critical loads from natural disasters in distribution systems. However, more dummy binary and continuous variables are needed with the increase of the number of microgrids, which will therefore increase the complexity of this model. To address this issue, this letter presents a new model to reformulatethe micorgrid formulation problem in resilient distribution networks. Compared with the traditional model, the number of both binary and continuous variables is greatly reduced, such that the computational performance is significantly improved. Numerical results on IEEE test systems verify the effectiveness of the proposed model.
