A method for COP prediction of an on-site screw chiller applied in cinema EI

Abstract :

An artificial neural (ANN) model is developed under on-site operating conditions, and it is different within a laboratory. On-site testing carried out to gather amount of data is for the purpose of training and prediction. Back propagation algorithm (BP) is applied to establish the transient coefficient of performance (COP) prediction model. The most suitable network structure is selected by comparison and cross-validation method, and the selected model is trained through setting the suitable network parameters. The error between the predicted results and the experimental data is almost within ±5.0% and the maximum error is 5.8%. Additionally, the validated model is used to evaluate the performance of a water-cooled variable frequency screw water chiller under various operating conditions and different openness of electronic expansion valve (EXV). It is valuable to apply neutral network on water-cooled screw chillers with maximum efficiency when satisfying a building cooling load instantly under necessary conditions. © 2018

Abstract :

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd Water vapor compression is a key technology that greatly affects system performance in heat pump and mechanical vapor compression/recompression applications. In this paper, two-stage water vapor compression methods (cascaded centrifugal compressors and combined centrifugal and twin-screw compressors) were proposed and studied to deal with the water compression process with large suction volume flow rates and high compression pressure ratios. A mathematical model was developed, and the thermal characteristics, achievable volume flow rate and saturation temperature rise of the two water compression systems were presented. The two-stage compression process using cascaded centrifugal compressors was found to be better for applications with total saturation temperature rise lower than 40 °C. The two-stage compression process using combined centrifugal and twin-screw compressors was found to satisfy applications with a saturation temperature rise as high as 80 °C. Further investigation showed that the second method could deliver a suction volume flow rate of 1418 m3/min with a suction vapor temperature of 50 °C using a current market-available twin-screw compressor with a capacity of 600 m3/min. The performance of the combined systems was largely affected by the pressure ratio and the compressor efficiency, system suction vapor temperature, and total vapor saturation temperature rise. The analyses showed that the combined system had high energy efficiency above 3.4 under all studied working conditions.

Experimental Investigation into the Effect of Oil Injection on the Performance of a Variable Speed Twin-Screw Compressor EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

In this paper, the effect of oil injection flow rate on the performance of a variable speed twin-screw compressor was investigated experimentally. Comprehensive experiments were conducted at different compressor rotational speeds and oil injection flow rates. As the rotational speed increased from 1000 to 3000 rpm, the compressor volumetric and adiabatic efficiencies increased while the specific power consumption decreased. However, the oil injection flow rate showed different influences on the compressor performance. As the oil injection flow rate increased from 27 to 50 L/min, the adiabatic and volumetric efficiencies increased while the compressor discharge temperature and specific power decreased. Further increases in the oil injection flow rate had little effect on compressor performance at flow rates above 50 L/min. The analysis indicated that the oil injection flow rate was limited by the discharge temperature at low compressor rotational speeds and was a trade-off among two efficiencies and specific power consumption at high rotational speeds.

Abstract :

Different from other types of compressor, pressure distribution on twin-screw compressor discharge end-face is related to both operating pressure and the lobe number, instead of being regarded as discharge pressure. In this paper, a mathematical model is developed based on a novel uniform property region (UPR) model to predict leakage through shaft seals, which was validated with experimental data. Simulation results show the leakage flow rate of shaft seals decreases dramatically and then reduces slightly with carbon rings number increases. The flow diameter of balance pipe determines the balance between internal and external leakage. Based on the analysis, several suggestions were given on optimizing shaft seals. For the discussed steam compressor, the number of carbon rings can be reduced from 4 to 1 and the flow diameter of balance pipe should be adjusted from 10 mm to 5 mm with a regulating throttling valve. The valve motion strongly couples with the differential pressure between the cylinder and the suction and discharge plenum, which has a significant influence on the performance of the refrigerator compressor. To examine the interaction between the pressure and the reed valve motion, this paper presents an experimental investigation into the inner workings of the refrigerator compressor, particularly the p-V diagram and the motion of the suction valve. The refrigerator compressor was modified to conveniently mount the sensors. Three pressure sensors were installed to measure the p-V diagram and pressure pulsation, while a strain gauge was employed to measure the motion of the suction valve. The interaction between the differential pressure and the valve motion were clearly observed from the experimental results. It was found that there was a considerable power loss up to 14.5% in the suction process under experimental conditions. The sticky force of the oil had a significant effect on both the motion of the suction valve and the suction phase of the compressor. The delayed opening of the reed valve increased the amplitude of the pressure pulsation in the suction plenum. The experimental method which integrates the pressure variety and the valve movement proposed in this paper could contribute to the efficient testing and the optimization of the refrigerator compressor.

Abstract :

This paper presents a novel swing compressor with no valves employed in air compression. The design and work principle of this swing compressor are introduced. And the effects of discharge port, exhaust cavity, and crank speed on the performances of this compressor are analyzed. Under the same operating conditions and dimensions, the size of exhaust cavity mainly depends on the discharge port width. Additionally, the exhaust cavity angle has a direct impact on the compression process, whether it is over-compression or under-compression. And the over-compression loss can be designed below 2%. Overall, the assessment of the structure shows that this novel swing compressor with no valves has the advantages of simple component geometries, light weight, and high efficiency, which makes it well suited to the requirements of air compression. © 2017, IMechE 2017.

Abstract :

Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is an effective and promising technology to convert low-grade thermal energy to electricity. As a key component in an ORC system, the expander plays a significant role in energy conversion efficiency in the ORC system. In this paper, an ORC experimental system is developed to investigate the performance of a twin-screw expander under various working conditions. Pressure sensors with high sensitivity and accuracy are installed at appropriate locations in the expander casing to monitor the p-V (pressure-volume) indicator diagrams which indicates the performance of the expander. The effect of the key parameters such as expander rotating speed, the suction pressure on the expander performance is studied using the experimental data. The results show that high expander rotating speed leads to large suction pressure loss, low volumetric and indicated efficiencies. As the rotating speed increases from 900 rpm to 1900 rpm, the volumetric efficiency decreases by up to 17.2% from 1.004 to 0.831 and the indicated efficiency reduces by up to 27.1% from 0.846 to 0.617. Furthermore, as the suction pressure increases from 550 kPa to 750 kPa the indicated efficiency rises up to a peak value of 0.815 and then falls. The volumetric efficiency does not show significant change as the suction pressure varies. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract :

The high operating pressure of a twin-screw compressor employed in high temperature heat pump or NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration systems often leads to extremely large axial force on the compressor rotors. Accurate calculation of this axial force is very important in selection of bearing and design of balancing pistons. In this paper, an experimental study of the axial force on the twin-screw compressor rotors was conducted. The variations of the axial force under different operating conditions were investigated. Furthermore, the axial force was also calculated by employing the mean pressure model and sector pressure model, and was compared with that of the experimental results. It was concluded that the sector pressure model is more accurate in predicting the axial force on the rotors in comparison with that of the mean pressure model. However, the mean pressure model was more accurate under operating conditions with large built-in volume ratio. Moreover, the axial force on the rotor end face was found to have larger influence than that on the rotor helical surface. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.
